Dear Residents of Lynnmour and North Vancouver,

We hope this update finds you well. We bring important news regarding the upcoming public hearing on the proposed supportive housing development at 1200 East Keith Road. Due to the overwhelming number of safety and well-being concerns raised by our community, the District of North Vancouver has extended the hearing to Monday, January 15, 2024, at 7:00 pm. This extension provides us with a crucial opportunity to reinforce our collective stance and ensure the voices of local residents take precedence.

Petition Details: The concerns outlined in our petition reflect the deep-rooted worries we share as residents. The proposed development poses a direct threat to our community's safety, well-being, and security. Key points from the petition and hearing include:

Safety Concerns: Our community is already grappling with safety concerns, recent break-ins, and increasing crime. The proposed supportive housing development poses a direct threat to our well-being and security.

Impact on Children and Daycares: The potential introduction of individuals with complex needs into our immediate vicinity, including children and nearby daycares, could be adversely affected.

Crime Rates and Drug Use: Existing safety concerns around similar low-barrier projects, coupled with the prospect of increased crime rates and open drug use, warrant our collective opposition to this development.

Deviation from Housing Strategy: The fast-tracking of the supportive housing project seemingly deviates from the District of North Vancouver’s Rental and Affordable Housing Strategy.

Lack of Unit Variety: The proposed project lacks a variety of unit types suitable for families given the studio configuration and low-barrier facility, and ignores the need low-income families who need larger units and high-barrier facilities to raise their children.

Issues with Lu’ma Management: Concerns have not been addressed about Lu’ma not adequately supporting and addressing the mental health and addiction issues of their residents in the other properties they manage.

Budget and Resource Challenges: The potential increase in policing, ambulance and fire resources required on an already stretched budget and resources has not been addressed.

How to Take Action:

Share the Petition: We encourage each resident to share the petition widely within our community to amplify our collective voice.
Send Public Comments: Submit public comments via email to input@dnv.org or by mail/hand delivery to the Municipal Clerk at 355 West Queens Road, North Vancouver, BC, V7N 4N5.
Attend the Extended Hearing: Your presence at the public hearing, either in person or virtually on Zoom, is crucial. To speak during the hearing, email signup@dnv.org before 3 pm on the day of the hearing.
Ensuring Local Representation: Our goal is to ensure that local residents drive the decision-making process. Your active involvement ensures that our genuine concerns are prioritized over external influences.

Together, We Can Make a Difference: Our community's unity is our strength. By participating in the petition, sending public comments, and attending the extended hearing, we collectively advocate for the safety and well-being of our community. Let's stand together to preserve the character of Lynnmour and protect the interests of our families.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment to our community.

Best regards,

Cameron
