Dear all,
Tuesday we handed over your 400,000 signatures to Constance le Grip, rapporteur of the text "Trade Secret" at the European Parliament.
We have told her again about the threats of this text despite the latest amendments to try to preserve the freedom of information.
She listened to us carefully, took notes of our warnings, and even expressed willingness to rework the text.
That is not enough!
We have emphasized the serious problem of the overall balance of the text: by giving the principle of trade secrets such a large scale, together with huge penalties, no exceptions will be strong enough to preserve the freedom to inform assuring citizens a free access to information.
We invited her to meet and listen media owners and whistleblowers to judge the legitimacy of our concerns, to make her understand the reality of the pressures they face on the ground. She agreed and they should meet soon.
Adopting this text means to take the risk of making censorship legal. The only possible outcome: the REMOVAL of the text!
We will inform you in the coming days of actions you could take with us to continue to weigh in this important debate for freedom of expression.
Today we would like to ask you to support Anthoine Deltour, emblematic victim of this principle of trade secrets that already exists in Luxembourg.
5 years in prison and a fine of 1.25 million euros, this is the risk for the whistleblower of LuxLeaks case. His civic gesture was recognized by the European Parliament, yet, he is accused by Luxembourg of violating trade secrets.
You have signed our petition, and you can help him too. Journalists' sources are the first victims of the protection of trade secrets. We must express our massively support to the courageous action of Antoine Deltour that helped promote information and democratic debate. It is unbelievable that he could be condemned for it!
Supporting Antoine Deltour, means also to give more strength to our appeal against business secrecy: click here to sign in support of the whistleblower Antoine Deltour: https://www.change.org/SoutenonsAntoineDeltour
Thank you all,
Elise Lucet
