Tuesday we exercised our right to vote. Today a man who fought for that right sits in prison for defending himself against an erratic attacker. For four years now Michael has sat in a Florida prison, away from his family and children. Florida has made some progress with dealing with this ridiculous mandatory minimum law, but not enough. Not while Michael and Marissa still continue sit in prison away from their families, for defending themselves. I know that many of you may be busy with your jobs, or maybe with school, or your families. So I just ask for a brief moment of your time to forward his petition to a friend or family member, or place a call to a Florida senator or state representative, to let them know how you feel about Michael’s case. Sharing his petition is easy, simply visit his page ( http://www.change.org/p/commute-the-25-year-mandatory-minimum-sentence-for-michael-giles ) and click the “Invite Friends” button. This week you exercised your right to vote, a right that Michael so proudly served his country to defend. Please consider exercising your other rights to contact your politicians and let them know how you feel. Let them know that even though a new term has started, Michael still waits to come home to his children. Let’s not forget about those who still need our help. Our collective voices can be more powerful than we know.
