OPERATION: Flood-Resilient Community of Aduas, Cabanatuan City

The Issue

Barangay Aduas is a well-known place in Cabanatuan City which is vulnerable to flood, an aftermath of rainfalls and/or typhoon. Flood risk comes from a community-specific combination of hazard (rainfall and storm surge), exposure (people and structures), and vulnerability (characteristics of the community that increase sensitivity to damage) which eventually causes some of the largest economic, social and humanitarian losses.

"Be Ready for a Flood Fight Before It's Too Late"

Hazard: Be Alert!

  • Floodplain Mapping: topography, precipitation and stream flow data
  • Climate Change Information - how will the current flood risk change in the next 20, 50 or 100 years?
  • Details on historical flooding

Exposure and Vulnerability:Enhance and Monitor Regularly!

  • Community Infrastructure: roads, bridges, drainages, culverts, housing, community buildings, water sources, landfills, water and sewer treatment facilities, etc.
  • Characteristics of Community Members: population, age, housing arrangements, behavior especially regarding proper waste disposal or proper waste management
  • Geography: location of creek or small streams and inclination of land areas

"We can't reduce flood hazard, but we can reduce exposure and vulnerability through adaptation planning. Tools and resources to help your community understand hazard and vulnerability and prepare a climate change adaptation plan."
