Hi everyone, I wanted to update everyone about our petition and let you know that I spoke to the CDR about this certification. I found out more about how the certification was developed and will explain that here as well. They surveyed thousands of dietitians and other healthcare professionals to create the certification. This certification is based on practice-based guidelines, meaning that the bulk of the content was provided by the practitioners who were surveyed. In terms of nutrition, they surveyed dietitians from the "Weight Management" dietetic practice group, as well as the "Diabetes Care and Education" practice group. This is why our voice wasn't heard! Many HAES and Eating Disorders Dietitians are not in these practice groups. Binge Eating Disorder treatment wasn't included because it is a "sub-specialty" <-- this is still shocking to me! We need your support now more than ever to make sure our voice and opinion is heard. As we know, the HAES principles aren't in the content specifically stated. I do want to say that the CDR felt that these principles were "already in the content" even though they were not outlined as such. I don't agree, but we'll have to agree to disagree! The women I spoke to were very respectful and are open to developing the certification further so the more people we have to support our cause the better! They also said that anyone who takes the certification exam can provide feedback. I provided resources for our cause, which are already included in the petition. I'm hopeful that change will come of this and directly to the certification itself. However, if that is not the case, it gives us a lot to think about moving forward. How are we going to unite to make sure that clients who have weight concerns are respected in this "weight management" world?? Thank you again for your support!! Jennifer McGurk, RDN, CDN, CDE, CEDRD
