TOC: Death of SJI International student being investigated as ‘negligent death’
Three weeks ago, The Online Citizen Asia described Jenna’s death as a “negligent death”—not an “accident.” We only became aware of this video now, but the framing matters. Negligence means duty, breach, and responsibility.
Yet the school has resumed overseas expeditions before the Maldives Police Service (MPS) has released its findings. Any conclusions about the cause or lessons learned are therefore premature. The school must accept the official MPS investigation outcomes—whatever they are—before claiming the matter is closed.
This case highlights a gap in Singapore’s laws: Privately Funded Schools (PFS) face no requirement to disclose serious overseas incidents to MOE or CPE, and no enforceable pause on risky activities pending investigation results.
We are calling for:
1️⃣ Mandatory reporting of all serious incidents on overseas trips
2️⃣ Independent safety audits before trips resume
3️⃣ PFS duty-of-care standards to match public schools
📌 Watch the video and spare a thought for Jenna.
