In memory of Sky, a beloved K9 who suffered at the hands of South Africa’s  Police Service, we raise our voices against the cruel and unacceptable treatment of K9 dogs in SAPS K9 units nationwide. Sky's story is not an isolated incident but a harrowing example of the neglect  experienced by these dedicated dogs tasked with serving our communities.

South Africa's K9 units are supposed to be the pinnacle of police assistance, employing highly trained dogs that play a crucial role in crime prevention, search and rescue missions, and public safety. However, these loyal companions are subjected to living conditions that are far from humane, inadequate shelter, insufficient medical care, kennel stress, long hours of confinement, which lead to severe physical and emotional distress for these dogs.

According to numerous studies, dogs subjected to continuous stress and poor living conditions have drastically reduced life spans and diminished capacity to perform their duties effectively. In South Africa, such conditions breach several animal welfare laws, yet enforcement of these regulations appears lax, resulting in systemic neglect.

Beyond the law, there is a moral obligation to ensure that animals, especially those conscripted into public service, are treated with the dignity and care they deserve. The death of K9 Sky is a wake-up call and a soul-stirring reminder of our accountability in safeguarding the welfare of K9's.

To address this pressing issue, we urge Ian Cameron to force  the South African Police Service to take immediate action.

The first step is to suspend operations at all K9 units pending a thorough review of the conditions.
