Say No To The Proposed "Go Ape" Application For Bedfords Park

Bedfords Park has the distinction of not only being a site of Metropolitan importance as set out by the GLA but is also a Local Nature Reserve having gained this status in 2009.  Bedfords is a much treasured green space.

Go Ape an adventure rope and zip wire ‘Tarzan Experience’ Company are applying to LBH for a 20 year Lease on 2 large areas of interconnected ancient woodland within the Park to set up ropes, tree walk bridges and a zip wire.

The Friends of Bedfords Park, local community and regular park users are appalled at this intention and are extremely concerned as we consider this  constitutes  inappropriate development spoiling a rare, treasured, and freely accessible tranquil public natural green space. It is also seen as setting a precedent for further leasing off our valued Public Parks, where cash is considered over our rich and diverse historic landscape.

If this application is successful, it will impact on the resident captive Red Deer herd and the inherent wild Fallow Deer and Muntjac.  There is also concern for the dusk roost of up to 900 Corvids, migratory and resident birds and bats.  The Park’s ancient woodland will have to contend with an extra 30-35,000 visitors a year and there is concern over compaction of the forest floor, fungi and ancient protected English Bluebells.

There are also major concerns over increased traffic on quiet narrow village roads, pollution and serious parking issues.

We, the undersigned, are

Opposed to the Go Ape application for adventure rope and zip wire courses in Bedfords Park Havering,  considering it to be inappropriate development in a tranquil, historic natural landscape and potentially harmful to the  trees, wildlife and biodiversity of a rare and treasured green space.
