Petition updateHalt your plans to build on open green space on Hackney Marshes!Partial Victory for Our Campaign
Save Lea Marshes
Aug 31, 2015
As you may have heard, the Planning Inspector recently announced her decision regarding the plans to construct a pavilion and car park on North Marsh and retain the car park on East Marsh.
Despite our very best efforts to represent the fact there could have been a more sustainable replacement for the North Marsh changing rooms, which would not have resulted in a loss of green space, the result of the public inquiry is that the proposed development will go ahead in its totality.
However, as a result of our coordinated intervention with other groups, the car park retained without consent on East Marsh after the Olympics has been refused permission to remain. Cllr McShane has publicly stated that this land will now be restored to open grass land.
We would like to thank everyone who signed this petition and raised their objections to the Planning Inspectorate. Without you, no public inquiry would have occurred and we would be facing the prospect of a new building and two additional car parks at each end of Hackney Marshes.
Alongside Hackney Marshes User Group we will now be lobbying for plans which maximise the possibilities for wildlife and biodiversity when the car park is dismantled on East Marsh.
Please continue to support our campaign to keep our marshes open and green
