The threat on Vancouver’s character homes continues. As of the end of September 2014, 715 demolition permits were issued. The situation is so extreme that Vancouver’s Character Homes and Gardens are now on Heritage Canada’s 2014 Ten Most Endangered Places List: https://www.heritagecanada.org/en/issues-campaigns/top-ten-endangered/explore-past-listings/british-columbia/vancouver-west-side-chara The Vancouver Character House Network submitted a questionnaire on the issue of character home demolitions to candidates for the upcoming civic election. These responses can be viewed here: http://nsvancouver.ca/election-2014/vancouver-character-house-network/ We hope this information will be useful when you vote on 15 November, or at the advanced polls. A mixed council with no one party forming a voting block will give our character homes the best chance. Here is some additional information you may wish to consider: -- Only two sitting councillors responded personally to our request: Adriane Carr and George Affleck (whose responses are being used for the NPA) -- Adriane Carr is the only councillor to endorse the Vancouver Vanishes Facebook Page. She met personally with the creator of the page shortly after it was launched in January 2013. She is the only councillor to visit affected neighbourhoods with a neighbourhood association. She was also a speaker at the Legg House Rally in May 2014. (She gave up a previous commitment to attend.) Pete Fry, a Green Party candidate, was also in attendance. -- Neighbourhoods for a Sustainable Vancouver have endorsed a candidate list. It can be viewed here: http://nsvancouver.ca Only 29% of Vancouverites voted in the last municipal election. Your vote on behalf of our built heritage counts. Please share this information with other concerned citizens. Vancouver Character House Network
