Dear Supporters,

While we support the critical services already located within our community, the area is inequitably inundated with shelters and related social services, and this emergency shelter must be relocated to another area.

The proposed location, already surrounded by nearly a dozen shelters within a few blocks’ radius, sits in the heart of a residential cul-de-sac between two elementary schools and is a two-minute walk from a supervised consumption site that offers a safer opioid supply program.

Like numerous established neighbouring facilities, the proposed 24-hour emergency shelter will

also provide harm reduction supplies (such as safe injection kits, smoking foils, crystal meth pipes, etc.), which, per St. Felix, can’t be used inside the building.

Based on the City’s and St. Felix’s negligence regarding proper community engagement over the past few months, combined with the reported experiences of residents surrounding St. Felix Centre’s previous location at 25 Augusta Ave. (including break-ins, syringes, open drug consumption, drug dealing, encampments, 24-hour noise, violence, defecation, vandalism, and property damage), we have no trust or confidence in the abilities of St. Felix or the City of Toronto to safely manage any facility of this type at this location

The future liveability of our neighbourhood is at risk. Placing a 24-hour emergency shelter at 629 Adelaide Street West is reckless, dangerous, and will seriously impact public safety.
