Knife-Side: Welland Canal Heritage Skatepark

Knife-Side: Welland Canal Heritage Skatepark
The Issue
The historic knifeworks building in St.Catharines, Ontario, Canada was once a bustling business in the late 1800s, along the original waterway of the very first Welland Canal. The City declared this property as a heritage site back in 1997, when a partial demolition was done, preserving the original building foundation.
The City neglects this property annually, and it was overgrown and littered with used needles, crackpipes, syringes, and squatters alike before we began our clean up process at the end of June, 2020. With a government run safe injection site being located at 120 Queenston St, right around the corner, there is no reason for this to be a dump site for these drug users.
A collaborative community effort in St.Catharines, privately funded, built & maintained by skateboarders and bikers from the local community. 30 individuals have come together so far on this project.
Our mission is to turn this wasted space into a recreational space for creative expression and physical activity in hopes of keep citizens away from a life of narcotics and addiction that plague our communities. The goal with this build is to create a safe place & preserve the heritage of this space.
