We are appealing the Master User Permit for the proposed 14-story hotel that will result in demolition of the 130-year-old Hahn Building, Thanks to our efforts and your signatures and support, the Hahn Building received Landmark Designation on January 20th, 2021 based on both its association with the heritage of our community and because of its prominence of location, age, and scale relative to Pike Place Market and the other buildings that occupy that prominent entrance. The Landmarks Preservation Board will meet to consider controls and incentives, if any, to be applied to preservation on Wednesday, April 7th, 2021 at 3:30 pm.
Despite having been awarded Landmark Status, our appeal of the Director’s Decision to grant a Master Use Permit is scheduled for 8 days beginning May 3, 2021. Our attorney has filed a Motion for Summary Judgement based on Landmark Status as new information that renders the SEPA Determination of Non-Significance invalid, and are waiting for a ruling on that motion, but we must continue to prepare for our day (which is actually eight days) in court. Attorneys fees are estimated at $35,000 and time for expert witnesses will cost another $9,000.
We’ve got $8K in the bank, so we must raise approximately $36K. With almost $22K in matching pledges still available, every dollar given will go twice as far.
Our generous donors have already collectively contributed just over $76K toward this effort over the last 3 years. And even more before we formed this non-profit. Won’t you please help us raise the $18K we need to cover this appeal?
If you’ve been meaning to contribute in the past but just haven’t, now is the time. And if you have already contributed, we need your help again. Remember, your contribution is tax deductible. Please don’t let us fail now when we have come so amazingly far.
- HOW YOU CAN HELP?
By mail, send your check, payable to “STME” or “Save The Market Entrance,” to Attn: Ruth Danner, 1415 2ndAvenue, Unit 702, Seattle WA 98101. - Or, online contributions may be made with a credit card or via PayPal through GoFundMe at https://www.gofundme.com/f/save-the-hahn-buildinghotel-elliott. On-line donations are subject to a small fee from GoFundMe and there is a delay in delivery to our account, but we hope it offers added convenience and allows donors to be more generous.
- AND, by emailing City Historic Preservation Officer, Sarah.sodt@seattle.gov with your public comments in support of strong controls and incentives for the preservation of the Hahn Building exterior, to preserve the scale, symmetry, and light at this important intersection.
Thank you in advance for your continued support of this effort. We have made tremendous headway against staggering odds and have a strong case to make before the Hearing Examiner, thanks in particular to the work of our profession team (Claudia Newman of Bricklin & Newman, Ross Tilghman of Tilghman Group, Katie Pratt and Spencer Howard of Northwest Vernacular Historic Preservation); our friends at Historic Seattle, Friends of the Market, Downtown Residents’ Alliance, and so many other; and to our neighbors who have volunteered countless hours and donated the funds to pay for these talented professionals.
Although the Hahn Building has been awarded Landmark status, we cannot declare mission accomplished. The developer still has a lot of cards left to play and we have to keep our head in the game to protect the ground we have claimed so far. Please show us you are with us by making your tax-deductible contribution today.
Stay well and stay engaged.
Sincerely yours,
Ruth Danner | President
