On Wednesday, December 2, the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board heard our request to consider nomination of the Hahn Building at the entrance to Pike Place Market (also known as Hotel Elliott, now home to the Green Tortoise hostel). If you wrote one of the 100+ letters of public support, thank you! Your passion received praise by several board members during deliberation over whether this building and location are worthy of landmark status and preservation. In a 6-to-1 vote, the December meeting resulted in acceptance of the landmark nomination.

But nomination is just the first step! Following nomination, the Board schedules a second hearing to give all parties a final opportunity to make their case before they vote to approve or deny Landmark Designation. On January 20th, 2021, we will again find ourselves before the Landmarks Preservation Board to reinforce our case for why this building and this location are worthy of official recognition as a landmark.

The building is obviously historic and a key part of Seattle’s iconic brick intersection at the entrance to Pike Place Market. But it is still threatened by development and we are asking you to join us by writing an email of support directly to Seattle’s Historic Preservation Officer Sarah Sodt at sarah.sodt@seattle.gov NOW to protect it!

What can you do? Ask the Landmarks Preservation Board to DESIGNATE the Hahn Building as a Landmark! Email City Historic Preservation Officer Sarah Sodt today – the deadline for comment is  Friday, January 15.

Learn more about how to write your comments. Comments must relate to one or more of the six criteria for nomination (listed at the bottom of this update). Criteria C and F are the most relevant for this nomination but D also applies. In your comments, please add your personal stories about the property.

This is our last chance to Save The Market Entrance – the time to speak up is now!

Thank you for taking action,
