Recently, calls have been made to rename the Morgan St. Bridge "Police Memorial Bridge" following the death of officer Jamie Cox. This is insensitive to the family and friends of Eddie Patterson who was killed by a gunshot wound inflicted by Jamie Cox. The investigation into how exactly Jamie Cox died is ongoing as well as a wrongful death lawsuit filed against the City of Rockford by Eddie Patterson's family. There is no denying that the death of Jamie Cox was tragic for those who knew him, but the City of Rockford, as the employer of police officers, is complicit in Eddie Patterson's death, and choosing to honor Patterson's killer rather than Patterson himself shows a lack of regard for Patterson's death and an unwillingness of the City of Rockford to take responsibility for the life they took.
