Fairness & Accountability for Port Colborne Water Bills
The Issue
City of Port Colborne water bills are spiralling out of control. Rising costs with no hope on the horizon. No accountability provided to citizens from the city or plan for change.
It is apparent to all residents that the COPC has massive water issues.. from sinkholes in our streets to water loss from neglected pipes and fountains across our city.
Instead of proper repairs, blame has been placed on the residents of Port Colborne for "water theft", and we have been charged accordingly. When compared with surrounding areas like Fort Erie, Wainfleet, Town of Pelham, Welland and others- Port Colbornes delivery charges were typically double..over $200 just for fixed charges most residents paying over $300/ per 3 months (no pool, no lawncare.. just basic home usage) compared to surrounding cities paying $150+. A homeowner using a minimal $80 in water has an additional $210 on their bill in fixed charges.. bringing their $80 in water usage to $290.
The city has not made sufficient repairs to the severely outdated and crumbling system in far too long and the hard working citizens are tired of footing the bill and being blamed for it.
We thank the hardworking Water and Public Works staff for their diligence keeping our city safe and clean, and we recognize it's not the individuals working in our water departments fault, but we need some answers and honesty from our mayor and city council on this long overdue issue.
We strongly urge City of Port Colborne to complete a full audit of the water system and provide a fair answer to citizens and reduction to a fair price for our water.
Enough is enough.
