Phoenix, Allow New River-Desert Hills, AZ to VOTE
The Issue
Tell Phoenix to allow the people of New River-Desert Hills Arizona vote on their destiny.
New River and Desert Hills Arizona is a county area with a rich history of Native Americans, Cowboys, Homesteaders and desert loving people. It is in the foothills just north of Phoenix and an area targeted for Phoenix expansion.
The people living here love the desert lifestyle and treasure their horses, llamas, alpacas, emus, goats, chickens, ostriches and even camels. It is a unique area in Arizona that is threatened by unbridled development.
It is an area that has limited water, very hot weather and a camaraderie of residents that has few equals. The area is roughly 55 square miles in area and surrounded on three sides by cities. The lifestyle of the people living there is threatened by encroaching large scale developments funded by huge development firms. We are right in the path of big city expansion
To protect the desert, the lifestyle and the husbandry the people are trying to incorporate as a municipality; to become their own city. A city that loves the Sonoran Desert, its cactus and hot summers. The people are a sunburned, eclectic collection of cowboys, engineers, doctors, retired people and young families that are infused with the desire to protect a unique environment. To keep the big city out.
Our problem is that we need approval from the City of Phoenix to do this. Arizona law requires an ordinance approving our incorporation from the surrounding cities before we can even vote on the matter. We are confronted by fifth largest city in the nation, the fastest growing city in the nation, in the fastest growing county in that nation, that is right across the street. We are opposed by giant development firms that want to build planned communities of hundreds of homes. We face land interests that want to pack our Sonoran Desert with apartments and strip malls all in an area starved for water.
Help us preserve our part of the Sonoran Desert; help us become a city whose residents can control their own lives and land; Join us in telling Phoenix to let the people of New River-Desert Hills Arizona VOTE on their destiny.
