Golden Lane Estate/Barbican Conservation Area

Golden Lane Estate/Barbican Conservation Area

The Issue

Golden Lane Estate and the Barbican in the City of London are both protected as listed buildings. However their immediate surroundings, despite containing a number of buildings of architectural merit and having been largely redeveloped after WW11 in a cohesive way have no protection. This petition seeks to change this by asking for the creation of a conservation area including both estates and the surrounding areas.

I am chair of the Golden Lane Residents' Association. Like many of the residents in the area I really like living here but the area is facing increasing levels of new development. Because land values are so high this is forcing developments to get bigger and bigger and we are looking at our estate being dominated by huge new buildings. House prices locally mean that these are sold often to overseas investors and as it is City policy to use any money from the developers to build social/affordable housing in outer parts of London meaning that the mix of well-off and not so well-off, City workers and Keyworkers is being reduced. This means that the area risks losing its sense of community which is part of what makes this a good place to live.

It would be great if you could sign this petition to give to the planners to encourage them to set up a conservation area.
