Recognize US as Artists in Kansas City DJ/Producers and Flow Artists
The Issue
The City of Kansas City through its Regulated Industries Division does not currently define Flow Arts or Performance-DJ Productions as live entertainment or live music. We are asking the City to recognize these performance arts for what they are, a form of artistic expression and communication, and not just social dance for entertainment or traditional DJ work. As such, the City should acknowledge them as a form of live entertainment and music, artistic expression, and an important art community contributing to the vibrant Kansas City arts culture.
Flow Art is more than dancing; it is performance art. It is a rhythmic movement based discipline that includes a variety of pursuits harmonizing skill based techniques with creative expression. Through the mechanism of movement, the Flow Artists express and communicate a variety of messages. Globally, nationally and locally, artists dedicate hours of time to create their craft and perform Flow Art.
Performance-DJ’s produce and preform original music that they have painstakingly produced and mixed, often combining organic music with altered scores and selected sounds, to create a live musical performance. These performances are followed by a supporting community and feature international, national and local talents. The act of "DJing" has evolved past its original notion of the old-school disc jockey who simply played the work of multiple artists. Technology has allowed an evolution into a unique performance art through which the artist to express and communicate a variety of social messages and artistic culture.
Communities of artists and art lovers seek out new platforms for Flow Art and Performance-DJ productions. They assemble to share the artistic expression which is unique to their established culture. These performance arts should be recognized by the City and treated as live entertainment and live music, on par with other artistic expression. Doing so would furthrs Kansas City’s commitment to its vibrant arts community and the artists who contribute to it.
