Dear Ms. Smith:
Re: OIG Case #20-0058-COM
CITY OF DETROIT OFFICE OF INSPECTOR GENERAL
The City of Detroit Office of Inspector General (OIG) has received and reviewed your complaint dated June 1, 2020. The complaint alleged an illegal promotion of Detroit Police Officer Dewayne Jones.
Based on the review of the above allegations, the complaint does not fall within the OIG’s jurisdiction. Section 7.5-305 of the Charter limits the jurisdiction of the Inspector General to “the conduct of any Public servant and City agency, program or official act, contractor and subcontractor...business entity... and persons” seeking certification or who are participating in “any city program.” Section 7.5-306 of the Charter further restricts the power and the authority of the Inspector General to “investigate... in order to detect and prevent waste, abuse, fraud, and corruption.” Your complaint does not involve abuse, waste, fraud, or corruption and is, therefore, not within the OIG’s jurisdiction.
The OIG appreciates your continued support of our mission to ensure honesty and integrity in City government.
Sincerely,
Kamau Marable, MA, CIG Deputy Inspector General City of Detroit
