Let's support Charlestown’s application for the Boston Neighborhood Slow Streets Program!
The Issue
Charlestown residents have expressed a crucial need to slow down motor vehicle traffic. Vehicles driving down our narrow, car-lined streets at excessive speeds are endangering residents and Freedom Trail visitors, especially the elderly, the disabled, and our children and pets. Currently, there are few, if any, signs or physical cues in place that could assist in reducing speed and greatly improve safety on our neighborhood streets.
Please support Charlestown’s application to become a candidate for the Boston Transportation Department’s new program, Neighborhood Slow Streets.
This city-wide initiative is a new approach to traffic calming requests in Boston. The aim of the program is “to reduce the number and severity of crashes on residential streets, lessen the impacts of cut-through traffic, and add to the quality of life in our neighborhoods.”
If Charlestown is one of the two or three neighborhoods chosen for the Neighborhood Slow Streets Program, the Boston Transportation Department and the Boston Public Works Department will work in partnership with residents, organizations, and businesses within our community to identify problems, and ultimately propose and carry out safety improvements to a zone consisting of 10 to 15 blocks.
