Reimagine South Boulder Rec CenterBoulder, CO, United States
Apr 16, 2026

If you can, please attend the public comment portion of today's City Council meeting (1777 Broadway):  5:30-6:15pm.  We need Council to see our strength.

Summary of recent developments:

  • Boulder Parks & Rec (BPR) now says that all three rec centers (not just South) need replacement-level spending.  BPR presented to City Council 2 amenity scenarios for each rec center.
  • For East and North, both scenarios keep or expand all existing amenities.
  • For South, one scenario removes core amenities, including South’s pool.
  • BPR has recommended the most expensive scenario for North:  a $65–$85 million addition and full renovation.
  • BPR has already spent over $700,000 on “design work” for the most expensive scenario for East:   a $70–$80 million renovation, which includes rebuilding both pools and adding 6 lap lanes (the exact number of lanes that South currently has).
  • Even though East sits within a FEMA Flood Zone (on all sides), BPR is planning to spend its $1 million federal disaster-shelter funding to build at East (not South or North) a disaster shelter for floods and wildfires.
  • BPR stated that a “field house” is a “top priority” for South.  [Note: a field house is an artificial-turf warehouse for team rentals.]
  • BPR commissioned “detailed” “conceptual drawings” and “cost estimating” for replacing South with a 70,000 sq ft “field house” that would eliminate South’s pool and also eliminate South’s natural-grass soccer field (which absorbs excess rainwater, hosts cross-country meets and bike races, etc).
  • BPR has repeatedly stated that South is failing and “end of life.”
  • BPR’s fall 2025 actions that purportedly “prolonged” South’s life consisted of installing 2 new natatorium fans, replacing several smaller natatorium windows with paneling, and repainting.
  • One month later, BPR’s Director stated at a PRAB meeting:  “the South Boulder Rec Center [] is falling apart.”
  • Nevertheless, BPR’s recommended sequencing for replacement/renovation is :  (1) East, (2) North, (3) South.

We'll send another update with specific info on emailing City Council.

Hope to see you at 5:30pm today!
