Cornwall based Merlin Cinemas want to convert the Public Rooms Building, situated in Bodmin Town Centre, to a cinema. The plans involve little change to the exterior of this historic and grade 2 listed property, except for adding some cinema signage, but would provide inside a modern comfortable four screen cinema facility, in a town which presently has no cinema. The company have a proven track record of delivering good quality cinema in historic buildings.
The building is presently under used and needs constant ongoing maintenance including some structural repairs. Bodmin Town Council decided to sell the building to someone who could take on this responsibility for the future. Merlin Cinemas have exchanged contracts on the building having been chosen as the preferred buyer, however they cannot complete the purchase without obtaining planning permission to deliver a cinema.
Presently local people have to travel to Wadebridge, St Austell or Plymouth to visit the cinema. Merlin Cinemas believe a lot more people would go to the cinema, considerably more often, if one were provided in Bodmin. This will also benefit the town centre in attracting increased footfall from both local people and visitors alike whilst, at the same time helping to drive the evening economy.
Cinemagoers often additionally eat, drink and shop in the surrounding area and the cinema will also create new employment in the town. The company have agreed to retain the present town museum in the basement area of the building, where it is currently located. The site benefits from considerable car parking close by.
Merlin Cinemas offer some of the most affordable cinema tickets in the UK. Their cinemas also show live content, bringing opera, ballet, theatre and live concerts to the screen as well as programming the latest film releases for all age groups and families.
This proposal will see the building continue to be used by the community, but with a new purpose: a cinema, used by far more people, far more often, than it is presently. A new life for a beautiful historic building.
Please sign this petition if you would like to see the building changed into a cinema for the people of Bodmin and the surrounding area.
