Does the “CIA World Factbook” stand for “World Error book”?

CIA World Factbook is a reference resource that is annually produced by the United States Central Intelligence Agency(CIA) and includes information about worldwide politics, economies, societies.

Especially the CIA posts and promotes the contents of the World Factbook identically on the web. The contents with the biggest impact and influence are reproduced and cited in worldwide authorities, educational institutions, publishing companies and portal sites such as Google.

Even though the CIA World Factbook should provide accurate and impartial information regarding its impact, it misinforms basic information about Korea.

Typical errors are as follows.

Korea’s official language is Korean.
But the World Factbook labels Korean and English as Korea’s official language.

[This is a serious error that could confuse foreigners who intends to travel Korea.]

On the eastern end of Korea, there is an island named ‘Dokdo.’
But the World Factbook marks ‘Dokdo’ as ‘Liancourt Rocks.’

[The name ‘Liancourt Rocks’ is named after a French whaling ship that ‘discovered’ Dokdo. But naming the island, which has been originally called ‘Dokdo’, with the name of the ship that ‘discovered’ it, is justifying the imperialist idea and is an indisputable error per se.]

In addition, Ulleungdo, an island near Dokdo is marked ‘under the jurisdiction of Gangwon-do Province’ but is actually under the jurisdiction of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province.

Koreans have called the name of the eastern sea of the Korean peninsula as the ‘East Sea’ for more than two thousand years.
However, the World Factbook labels the sea as the ‘Sea of Japan.’


[The name ‘Sea of Japan’ is a vestige of Japanese imperialism and is a lopsided name supporting Japanese imperialism. This is an error that degrades the fairness and credibility of the World Factbook. In 2017, the Virginia House passed the bill that required all Virginia textbooks to include the ‘East Sea’ alongside ‘Sea of Japan.’ Also in 2019, the New York State Education Department updated a portion of the curriculum involving the East Sea, and now uses both names ‘East Sea’ and ‘Sea of Japan’ when teaching about the region.]

We ask the CIA to correct basic errors related to Korea in the World Factbook

First, Korea’s official language is ‘Korean.’ We demand the CIA to rectify the mark ‘Korean and English’ to ‘Korean’ as Korea’s official language.

Second, we claim the CIA to label the island in the eastern end of Korea as ‘Dokdo’, and we request that the jurisdiction of Ulleungdo be corrected to Gyeongsangbuk-do, not Gangwon-do.

Third, we demand that the eastern sea of Korea be labeled ‘East Sea.’
