Gun Control using Technology

Gun Control using Technology
The Issue
There isn’t much control over how the guns are regulated in the United States. Anyone over the age of 18 and with a valid license is able to obtain a weapon. Federal law prohibits certain people from owning firearm, such as those with certain kinds of criminal records or mental illness, drug addicts, immigrants without legal status, veterans who left the military with a dishonorable discharge and anyone with a permanent restraining order keeping them from a partner or a partner’s children. This method obviously isn’t working as guns are still ending up in the hands of the mentally ill. We propose to solve this issue by introducing Blockchain technology with guns. Blockchain would make up a database to track the gun at all times. This gives the gun owner a peace of mind, knowing where his gun is at all times. Furthermore, this would help regulators control who owns the guns. For example, before each sale, the gun would go through a series of authentication from multiple regulators. The first level of regulation would be the buyer. The buyer determines what gun he wants. The second level of regulation would be the seller. The seller would check if the buyer is physically and mentally capable of owning a gun. The final regulator would be the government, who would run a background check on the buyer and determine if they are within standard of owning a gun. Every time a gun is sold, this procedure would help the guns stay out of the wrong hands and ensure guns don’t end up on the blackmarket. However an issue with this solution would be to adopt this method of purchasing guns nationwide. Only then would this solution be most effective, giving drastic results right away. It must be mandated at a federal level and enforced by officials. The benefits of using Blockchain is that it is resistant to hacking and extremely easy to maintain.
