If you’re wondering if Community Choice Energy has worked elsewhere, the answer is a resounding YES! 

Nearly 1 million homes in Los Angeles and Ventura County started buying their electricity through a similar program in February this year (see LA Times graphic). This LA Times article reported that 97% of residents chose to participate and pick one of three rate plans: One with a 36% renewable energy mix that is 1% cheaper than Edison’s base rate, one with 50% renewables that’s on par with Edison, and one with 100% renewables that’s 9% more expensive than Edison. 

Another good case study is San Peninsula Clean Energy (PCE), which started in 2015 and has 300,000 residential accounts in all 20 cities in San Mateo County. Customer rate savings from PCE now total about $17 million annually.

PCE provides residents with lower rates and a higher portion of renewable energy than Pacific Gas & Electric, the local utility. With the default “ECOplus” option, customers receive 5% savings when compared with PG&E’s rates. Of the energy purchased on behalf of ECOplus customers, 50% is renewable and 90% is greenhouse gas free. In comparison, PG&E’s portfolio is 33% renewable and 80% greenhouse gas free. 

PCE customers can also choose 100% renewable energy for $2.50 more per month than PG&E’s rates for the average household. Customers can also choose to remain with PG&E as their energy provider, but Peninsula Clean Energy has seen a very low opt-out rate at 2.4%.
