28 December 2021 marks the first anniversary of Zhang Zhan's imprisonment.
Lawyer Li Dawei has revealed that Zhang Zhan's mother was allowed to speak to her via a video link (not a meeting in person) at the end of November. Zhang Zhan was still very weak. She was still unable to walk. Her condition remains grave. She was hospitalised at the end of October, presumably after her mother had been devastated seeing her via a video link on 29 October that 'her life was hanging by a thread'.
We do not know how long Zhang Zhan stayed at the hospital, whether she was tied to a bed while being force-fed (as she was subjected to for 11 days in August), what medical treatment she has been receiving. The prison authorities did not inform Zhang Zhan's family of the results of her medical tests.
Her lawyer has received no response to his request for a meeting with her, which was submitted to the Shanghai Women's Prison on 13 October.
