Chilliwack: Keep Our School Yards Green and Safe - STOP Using Roundup and Glyphosate

0 have signed. Let’s get to 1,500!

In 2018 Dewayne Johnson, a 46-year-old former school groundskeeper was awarded $289m when a jury ruled the weedkiller Roundup caused his cancer.

In Livermore, California, Alva and Alberta Pilliod used Roundup, on their property for more than three decades. They were later diagnosed with the same type of cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, four years apart and awarded $2 billion in damages in May 2019.

The key ingredient in Roundup is Glyphosate and it is making people, including our children, sick.

More and more science is showing Glyphosate is being linked to:

  • Autism
  • ADHD
  • Mental health issues
  • Cancers like non-Hodgkin lymphoma
  • Endocrine disruption
  • Gut health issues
  • Neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimers and Parkinson's

We have reason to be concerned and make our voices heard to protect our children and community.

Glyphosate is still being used in Chilliwack on our school grounds, in our parks, on our streets and on many farms to kill unwanted weeds and grass.

It’s the key ingredient in Bayer’s (formerly Monsanto) Roundup and is the most widely used herbicide in Canada and worldwide.

Roundup is used to kill weeds – it’s also used to“desiccate” or ripen grains so they can be harvested early.

What you need to know:

In 2015, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) declared glyphosate a “probable carcinogen.”

Bayer, the parent company of Monsanto, insists that glyphosate -- is safe. It’s NOT. This is not the first time big industry has lied – we were told tobacco was safe when they knew it wasn’t.

Scientific research and court evidence proves that glyphosate activated herbicides (like RoundUp) are dangerous and linked to cancer along with a series of other health challenges.

The effects of glyphosate exposure and associated risks add up.

It’s in the food we’re feeding our children and on our playgrounds and parks. It’s making our kids sick:

Let's link arms Chilliwack and show our city we, the citizens of Chilliwack, want glyphosate banned from use on our school grounds, on our playgrounds, on our streets, and on/in our foods.

There are simple alternative solutions being used world wide:

  • Mow grass
  • Burn weeds
  • Steam weed weeds
  • Pull weeds
  • We can educate our children by making yards and school grounds safe and edible, and implement programs that teach kids how to grow, forage, weed, and wildcraft.

Glyphosate herbicides are now banned or restricted in 17 countries worldwide.

Communities in BC including: Vancouver, Victoria, Esquimalt, Oak Bay and Saanich have all banned public and private use of glyphosate. Let’s join them!

As long as glyphosate is being used, our childrens’ and our community’s health are at risk.

As parents and citizens of Chilliwack, who deeply care about the safety and health of our children and community, I invite you to join us.   Let’s have glyphosate banned on our school grounds, playgrounds and streets of Chilliwack by signing the petition below:

We the undersigned call on the School District 33 and the City of Chilliwack to ban the use of glyphosate herbicides in Chilliwack on school grounds, playgrounds, parks, trails, streets, city property and domestically.
