Autism Care in Colorado- ABA & Autism Testing

Over the past month, several news outlets have been reporting on the changes in care with ABA Therapy centers in Colorado and the ability for families to access this intensive intervention if they choose.

History:

Two Years ago the Joint Budget Committee made changes, which took effect on July 1, 2023, to the payout rate for providers who take Medicaid in the state of Colorado. This was done to balance the State budget, and made the payout rate for Autism diagnostic services and ABA therapy services much lower. The decision was made without consideration of current inflation nor the 1:36 prevalence rate of autism. This means that providers who accept  Medicaid are now paid at a much lower rate and are having to make hard choices related to serving Medicaid members. Many ABA centers have closed due to the previously low rates which were lowered again as of July 1, 2023. Practices that specialize in identification of Autism that serve Medicaid members are not able to sustain their businesses. The result is that our community will likely experience even longer wait times to access interventions and diagnosis.

Response:

Autism Society of Colorado (ASC) is involved and advocating for access to care for Autistic people. We have representation from our executive board on the committee working with HCPF (Health Care and Policy Financing) to rebalance Medicaid payout rates and access to appropriate professionals for Autism care. We have written and delivered position statements to our legislative representatives and continue to work with our legislative representatives as we move forward. Currently, there is no resolution.

Ways to Get Involved:

-contact your local legislature and speak with them about restoring Medicaid payout rates for people utilizing specialized supportive therapy for Autism and those needing diagnostic Autism testing.
