African Children Have the Right to Live – Why Don’t We Defend this Right?
This petition had 1 supporter
The discrepancy between the life of African children and the life of other children around the world is huge, without any exaggeration. The African children are confronted daily with some of the harshest problems in the world, such as starvation, poverty, severe diseases, exploitation, and child labor. On the other hand, we live in the comfort of our own homes, benefiting from the facilities that modern life provides us,and we usually throw away the foods that we’ve just bought but we didn’t eat. When it comes to our children and our own health, we take advantage of all kinds of modern health applications and devices, such as Fever Scout, while the children from Africa are dying from malaria and yellow fever.
The Reality of Living in Africa as a Child
African children have to deal with major problems in their everyday life. One of these is poverty. We are not talking about not having money to afford a new outfit every season; we are talking about not having what to eat for days! Starvation is one of the biggest issues of African children, an issue that usually leads to malnutrition and infant mortality. In fact, it is estimated that more than 20,000 children die every day – yes, you read well, every day – because of poverty. Besides starvation and malnutrition, poverty also leads to all sorts of diseases.
If some of them are mild, the majority of the diseases in Africa are severe, and they require immediate treatment. But what to do when you cannot afford it? Tuberculosis, AIDS, malaria, yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis A, B, and C, meningitis, and tetanus are just a few of the common diseases in Africa that kill thousands of children every day. Many of these conditions can be avoided through prevention measures or vaccines. But these are nothing but a dream for those who don’t afford at least one simple meal per day.
Another serious problem of the African children is exploitation. Many children have to work even full-time for helping their families. Moreover, the idea of selling your children is not uncommon on this continent. They have to work in miserable conditions, do physical activities that are not at all appropriate for their age and physical development, and they receive a very small amount of money or sometimes just goods. Not to mention that they don’t get to go to school.
