Goa taxi revolution fully supports CM Manohar Parrikar, MLA Nilesh Cabral and Transport Minister Sudin Dhavlikar for strict action to enforce the speed governors. Let us all support them on their firm stand as taxi strike has been a total flop.
The main reason given by taxi drivers for refusing to install speed governors is they want to drive fast cutting across the traffic so the tourists reach in time. This excuse itself is all the more reason the law for speed governors should be strictly enforced. Actual reason is they want to drive fast to make more trips as their loot has become highly lucrative as taxi fare is more than even the plane fare. In addition Goa has the unique problem of driving on both sides of the road without divider. This means taxi drivers will take more chances in overtaking, putting innocent lives in danger.
Goa tops the number of accidents in India as per article below and nobody cares about safety of public and the tourists. Goa is the only state which has no proper public transportation that too even to mass transit points like airport and train stations. Goa leads the country in Vehicle density. With no vision for public transportation the traffic congestion will increase every year and need to drive fast and beat traffic will be even greater every year. Tourists would be better off abandoning Goa and going to other destinations in India where the law is strictly enforced and provides much safer service from the Ola/Uber.
The taxi driver's argument that it should also be made compulsory for private vehicles does not make sense. In case of private vehicles app passengers are known to each other but when anyone hires taxi their life is in the hands of another unknown person, speed regulation is needed for this gap and there is no system to complain, once the tourists go back, they vent it out in forums. In the taxi petition there are many comments about rash driving by taxi drivers, there are times when taxis overtake while talking on the phone, in poor visibility during rains, etc.
Vehicle life is improved with speed governors and it is a not correct that warranty is not valid. Speed governors have been in Central Motor Vehicle Act 1988 for decades and the manufacturers confirm to Indian regulations.
Kudos to the Transport Director in planning alternative arrangements to the tourists. Every tourist interviewed confirmed they did not feel impact of strike. We hope that the buses will continue permanently in service even after the strike is called off. Every bus will save cost for the traveler, most importantly save traffic congestion, pollution and at the same time turn KTC into profitable venture.
It is strange that some rogue MLA's are hand in hand with Taxi drivers just for the vote bank and do not understand the consequences to the general public. The taxi mafia is clearly threatening these shameless MLA's at Azad Maidan that they will not vote for them if they don't meet the unreasonable demands. The MLA's are serving their vested interests of vote banks against the interests of the public and Goans should keep this in mind for next election. While the taxi strike is a complete flop and people have said they don't need taxi, these rogue MLA's are trying to end strike in the name of tourism business.
Public will be much safer after speed governors are enforced at Feb 24 deadline. But the main issue of taxi fares, meters and openly inviting competition from Ola/Uber is ignored to divert attention and keep looting. As a tourists state this is the opportunity to negotiate with Ola/Uber and open up the market for the benefit of Goans as per their fundamental rights. Opening to Ola/Uber will automatically solve all the issues including speed governors, fares, subsidy, insurance, clean taxis, courteous service, safe tracking, feedback, etc never to bring the state to ransom by the goons.
This venomous attitude of the taxi operators has cost us Goans. For decades, Goans found it cheaper to have and run their own vehicle, than to hire a taxi. This has silently cost Goan families lakhs of rupees over the years, and also worsened the traffic situation of a state that aspires to be a model of Singapore. Now we have a chance to set things right, by supporting the government and by encouraging taxi aggregator models such as Ola/Uber and other taxi operators that support competition.
