14 Aug 2017
This Friday, Aug. 18, is the 92nd anniversary of the grand opening of the Uptown Theatre, Chicago. We need just 1,087 signatures to make our goal of 5,000 signatures for the Restore the Uptown! petition. Think of it: A whopping 3,913 of you have already signed the petition! Why 5,000? That was the dream of Balaban & Katz and the marketing. They wanted to build a ring of 5,000-seat theatres around this great city, beginning with the Chicago Theatre downtown. Their grand plans and even grander marketing up-sold the number of seats but the buildings -- built for all time -- were nonetheless spectacular and spaciously comfortable. The Uptown Theatre, for instance, could have held many more than its official count of 4,381 seats if space had not been left for more patron comfort. Please do share this petition with your friends and family members today. We want to tell everyone why the Uptown is important to us and we want to show Chicago powerbrokers that there is a demand for this project to be done -- not just talked about.
