ADUs in Chicago still not legal citywide

Steven VanceChicago, IL, United States

This petition began in 2019. Since then, City Council has allowed ADUs to be built in five pilot areas and hundreds of them have been permitted (and an unknown number of ADUs have been built).

The movement to allow ADUs has grown. Now, more groups are advocating and organizing to allow ADUs to be built in all residential areas, and that's why I'm writing this petition update.

Lead organizers include Urban Environmentalists Illinois, Sierra Club Chicago, and Southwest Collective.

Please sign this new petition, run by Urban Environmentalists Illinois, where I'm a member and volunteer organizer for the campaign to legalize ADUs across Chicago.

Your advocacy is really needed at the ward level. A weak majority of alderpersons support ADUs, which isn't enough to call for a vote in City Council. At the least, email your alderperson and ask them to support Ald. Lawson's ordinance SO2024–0008918 (link to ordinance). If you want to get more involved, please join Urban Environmentalists Illinois, or one of the other mentioned groups.
