Please share this petition with your social media networks, friends and family in Chicago. There are many national developments making this time ripe for a positive change in how future teachers are taught to teach reading -- and these changes will benefit ALL kids, not just the 1 in 5 who struggle to read.
Even if you don't have kids in school, you pay Chicago taxes, and without effective literacy instruction for all, problems like homelessness, incarceration, and drug abuse will continue to grow. Did you know about half of prisoners can't read?
- EdWeek just published a report deeming the top 2 national reading curricula as failing to meet expectations. This is why our national reading scores have been so low for so long. It's not just about dyslexia, and it's not the teachers' fault.
- The nation's most-used curricula has come under even more fire for admitting that their programs don't work for 20% of kids (more like 60%), shutting down online pushback, and calling our movement rabid. Rabid for reading!
It's time to follow the science of reading movement. We have waited for too long. Get your friends and family on board.
This petition for better teacher education is just one more tiny step in a huge, growing movement toward literacy and justice for all!
Thanks
Cyndi
