Update the Grass and Foundation of the Legendary Soldier Field

Former Chicago Bears members have commented on the footing at Soldier Field, including Hall of Fame linebacker Brian Urlacher. Studies have shown that grass is better on the body for the players than turf, however with Kentucky Bluegrass something is still not clicking. Bears have led the NFL in injuries for the last two seasons. While Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy have addressed this from the personnel standpoint hiring an entirely new strength and conditioning department, something has to be done with the field.

If it’s not the grass itself, the foundation should be discussed before the season begins. Northwestern University made improvements and have been ranked as the No. 2 grass field in college football behind Iowa State who consistently wins awards for their field (via SportsTurf Magazine).

One suggestion would be to call Tim Van Loo, Iowa State’s grounds manager and offer him a position with a salary he couldn’t refuse to make Soldier Field not only visually appealing again but great for our players. The ones that we PAY TO SEE, attach our pride, joy and bragging rights to actually play and not be involuntarily sidelined due to injury. Every adjustment helps.

Should that not be an option, a local legend could help solve the issue. Roger Bossard, the Sod Father as he’s known around the MLB. Is the groundskeeper for the Chicago White Sox. Familiar with the city, culture and team Bossard could be the missing piece/secret ingredient the Bears need to go over the top (should grass be what they desire to keep). Bossard has consulted the Bears organization before and at the LEAST could have the same role. There’s a reason his family business is on its third generation, executing excellence at the highest level. When a team is giving the fans bobble-heads of Bossard, it shows how important he is to the organization.

We want better for our players, for our fans and for our organization. If nothing else, this should show that we care even about the most intricate details involving our team. If Chicago has the best fans in the world, this is the reason why. So listen to us and make a change that will ultimately make us all better.
