Wow! We are at 1414 signatures-so grateful to everyone! The more signatures we get the greater the impact! If you can think of anyone to share with that would be awesome-even Islanders living away. Jack Simmonds did an interview for Compass on March 18th and the news can be seen online in the first quarter of the program and the story is on the CBC website. Then an excellent article in The Guardian on March 21st. Nice photo Jack looking good! A special thank you to Stella Newman for taking the time to writing a letter to the editor.
I realize there are way more significant things going on in the world and in people’s personal lives right now and so more an opportunity to come together over something we agree on -without too much time and energy! If a Council person tables a motion to overturn the resolution and another seconds the motion they put it to a vote. Any councilor who feels they are in a conflict of interest is supposed to recuse themself from the votes in general. The mayor only votes to break a tie. So a 6-4 or 5-4 vote in favor of rescinding would undo the decision. This would bring things back to square one and the need to create policy for situations like these going forward and give the community the rightful opportunity to engage before major decisions are voted upon. If you live in Charlottetown please reach out to your councilor and tell them how you feel. Simmons is in ward 3 and the councilor is Mike Duffy but the interest in this is certainly not restricted to ward 3!!
Sponsoring projects is not a new practice but where there is already prior history there needs to be a policy in place to protect that. When it comes to sponsoring this great new facility there would be many ways for the community to participate and sponsor elements of the project. If there are things needed like hockey gear to donate, sponsor a young hockey, furniture, outdoor seating, landscaping and equipment then community sponsorship(s) is a great way to raise funds. This is a photo of Ethel Simmons one of the land donors, unfortunately we can’t find one of her older brother Frank. Thanks to both of you!
