The Young Turks has become a network with bonafide progressive street cred, garnering more than one billion (billion with a b) YouTube views.

But back in the early 1900s, The Young Turks was the name of the group that perpetrated the Armenian Genocide – slaughtering approximately 1.5 million Armenians and forcing deportations throughout the Ottoman Empire of the survivors from 1915-1923. The Young Turks of a century ago decimated a population that still, today, has not fully healed.

Nobody with a modicum of humanity would rally around a program called “the Nazis,” and yet, all over “progressive” politics, The Young Turks are being promoted. Yet the Young Turks is the regime that organized and executed the annihilation of circa 1.5 million Armenians as well as Assyrians and Greeks—essentially the entire Christian population in what was then Ottoman Turkey.

It’s salt into the collective wound of the Armenian people, yet another reminder of our unacknowledged pain and injustice by Turkey, which was built upon the bones, blood—and land of Armenians.

The Young Turks brand exists in the same space as the confederate flag, the use of Native American names or symbols by non-native sports teams, etc. 

This petition asks for TYT to rename itself with consideration to the issues raised above, and to stop elevating the names of murderous regimes like “The Young Turks.”

The impact of this name is present whether the name intentionally refers to the group and its history or not.
