The Issue

Ever since the name "Uranus" befell the planet William Herschel first recognized in 1781, fourth grade teachers across the world have dreaded teaching about this icy world.

This cause aims to rename our seventh planet from the sun "Urania" by petitioning then International Astronomical Union to hold a vote to change it when it meets in Vienna, Austria in August of 2018. This is the same entity that decided that Pluto was not a planet -- Uranus couldn't possibly be!

Notably, the last name "Wiener" means one from Vienna. As such, it is believed that this meeting will be the perfect forum to affect change.

Yes, the appropriate pronunciation is the one you can't say without flinching, although for the same reason I call my dermatologist "Dr. Fyooks", there are some save-embarrassment variations.

Urania: Urania is the great granddaughter of the Greek God, Uranus, she is the daughter of Zeus. She may have also swiped right on Apollo. She is the muse of astronomy. Venus has been the only girl in the neighborhood for too long.

Practically speaking, putting at ease teachers everywhere will helps kids actually learn about this planet. I remember elementary school: "Saturn is the second most massive planet, being 95 times as massive as Earth. It has the most extensive rings and the solar system's largest moon. ~Cough~ Uranus ~Cough~. Now Neptune is a very cold place..."

It's time.
