Tell Change.org to Remove Petitions Supporting Jian Ghomeshi
This petition had 172 supporters
CBC radio host Jian Ghomeshi has recently had his employment terminated on account of some information that the CBC received. He soon responded with a facebook post claiming that his termination was in regards to private and consensual sexual practices. Within hours, the Toronto Star released an article stating that four women have been violently sexually or physically assaulted by him.
Several petitions exist on Change.org calling for the CBC to apologize to Ghomeshi and reinstate him in his job. Thousands of people have signed these petitions. The presence of such petitions and the popularity of them projects a very harmful message to victims of sexual assault, and perpetuates a culture of victim shaming and silencing.
Petitions supporting an accused sex offender have no place on Change.org and should be removed immediately.
Victims of sexual assault deserve our respect, and it is our responsiblity to believe them.
Change.org's Terms of Service state that users "agree not to use the Service or the Site to: [...] upload, post, transmit, share, store or otherwise make available content that, in the sole judgment of Company, is objectionable or which restricts or inhibits any other person from using or enjoying the Site, or which may expose Company or its Users to any harm or liability of any type;"
It behoves Change.org to recognize the harm that petitions supporting Jian Ghomeshi cause to victims of sexual assault and use their judgement to remove these petitions as in in accordance with their terms of service.
