Change Girl Scout Promise to Encourage Global Service
The Issue
My family of four embraces a rich tapestry of cultures, with three different nationalities woven into our daily lives. Growing up, I have experienced the world by living in multiple countries, and my daughters have had the unique opportunity of being born in two different nations. Now, as my girls step into the exciting world of Girl Scouts, I wish for their journey to be encapsulated in a promise that reflects a global outlook – one where they serve all of humanity, not defined by a single religion or country.
Our world is increasingly interconnected, and today's children should be nurtured with a mindset that sees everyone on this planet as equal. The current Girl Scout Promise encourages girls to serve "God and my country," a noble sentiment, but inherently limiting in its scope. Rather than focusing service on specific religious or national entities, let us expand this promise to "serve the world," fostering a sense of global citizenship and universal compassion among our youth.
By encouraging a global perspective, Girl Scouts can instill values of empathy, unity, and responsibility towards diverse communities and cultures around the world. In doing so, young girls can grow up to be leaders who understand and appreciate the rich diversity of our planet.
According to the Pew Research Center, close to a quarter of the world's population is unaffiliated with any religion, and societies are becoming increasingly multicultural. Adapting the Girl Scout Promise to include serving the world aligns seamlessly with this evolution towards global inclusivity.
It is time for the Girl Scouts organization to reflect the changes in the world by reevaluating their promise. By doing so, they can continue to foster the growth and development of young girls in a way that prepares them for the diverse realities of today’s global environment.
Let us inspire a new generation of Girl Scouts dedicated to service beyond borders, race, and creed. Join us in advocating for this inclusive change, so all girls can aspire to be compassionate citizens of the world. Please sign this petition to support updating the Girl Scout Promise to one that embraces world service and equality for all.
