The Issue

The term "Artificial Intelligence" projects an inaccurate perception of what these systems are capable of, given that they lack true consciousness or ethical decision-making. As someone familiar with the intricacies and impact of this technology, I find the reliance on the term "intelligence" concerning. It implies a level of autonomous decision-making akin to human cognition, which these systems do not possess. Instead, these are sophisticated data processing tools reliant on algorithms and vast datasets, and at best should be described as "Smart Data Assistants" or "Cognitive Assistants."

Labeling these tools as "intelligent" not only misleads but also paves the way for misuse and overestimation of their abilities. Particularly, unsettling incidents involving AI systems have illustrated their limitations and the unpredictable nature resulting from bias embedded in their data processing algorithms. For instance, AI systems have been known to make erroneous decisions leading to serious consequences, such as misidentifying individuals in security systems or miscalculating significant data that impacts healthcare outcomes.

We are at a juncture where the terminology used governs how the general public and policymakers perceive the potential and risks of these technologies. By adopting terminology such as "Smart Data Assistant" or "Cognitive Assistant," we not only provide a more accurate representation of the technology but also encourage a perception shift that aligns better with what these tools currently offer and how they should be regulated.

Circumventing the term "intelligence" ensures that the human operators and developers retain responsibility and engage necessary checks that artificial mechanisms lack. This change will align technological advancements with humanistic values where AI-driven systems assist rather than endanger or mislead.

I urge the tech community, policymakers, and global institutions to consider this language shift seriously. It's a small change in terminology but one with significant implications for transparency, ethics, and safety in technological advancement.

Please sign this petition to help us bring about this critical change in the discourse around technology. By doing so, you will contribute to an industry that is more accurate, transparent, and aligned with ethical standards, ensuring a safer and smarter integration of AI in our daily lives.
