Change AFCON 2027 dates to December 2027
The Issue
In 2027, our nation will be experiencing a pivotal moment as we head into General Elections during the official campaign period. It is a time when democracy should thrive; however, the current scheduling of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 presents a significant clash. The tournament is slated to take place in June and July, right in the middle of our campaign season. This raises a critical concern: the potential for the incumbent president to monopolize national attention, just as occurred during the 2025 CHAN Tournament in Tanzania.
When a major event like AFCON overlaps with an election campaign, the playing field instantly becomes uneven. The incumbent, who holds national office, naturally garners media attention and public visibility by virtue of event-related functions and presence. This could significantly diminish the opportunity for opposition candidates to communicate their platforms and rally support, ultimately skewing the electoral process in favor of the incumbent.
Our democratic principles must not be compromised by poorly timed international sporting events. The solution is quite straightforward: FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) must consider rescheduling the AFCON 2027 to December 2027 through January 2028. This adjustment would not only harmonize the event with the international sports calendar but, most importantly, ensure that our democratic processes are upheld without undue influence or distraction.
Historically, significant international events like FIFA World Cups have been flexible with schedules to accommodate timing issues across various global contexts. AFCON should be no different, especially when democratic fairness is at stake. We can learn from past challenges and ensure that both sport and democracy can coexist without one overshadowing the other. Kenya is a home for many East and Central Africans fleeing repression and wars back home. Save this home for them and for us. Tanzania election boycott and the police brutalities that followed in Uganda's Election fraud can't be repeated in Kenya. We co-host the tournament with our neighboring nations. From the look of things this dates are set by design to hoodwink the voters while opposition figures are jailed serious campaign issues are swept under the carpet. Kidnappings are going on to dissenters. Election chiefs are hand picked by the incumbents. Retiring or deceased presidential petition judges of the supreme court are replaced with cronies. The 2026 US-Canada-Mexico FIFA world cup is not on a general election year. Why place this tournament at such a critical campaign period? Euro cup Events are never scheduled near election dates in Europe. Why do this to us?
Join us in urging FIFA and CAF to make this crucial change. By signing this petition, you're standing for fair electoral processes and the safeguarding of democratic practices. Let's ensure that every candidate has equal access to the platform they deserve, and every voter can focus on the future of our country without undue influence. Sign the petition and be a force for democracy. We welcome you all for a pleasant African Christmas and tantalizing African football in 2027.
