We, the below signed students of UCSB, hereby request a halt to the ticketing and impounding of bikes parked outside bike racks until which time the university can provide enough racks to accommodate the large portion of the student body relying on bikes for transportation. In the spirit of fairness, we students pledge to continue to park bikes in the vicinity of designated areas so as not to create the hazards which bike racks were originally intended to mitigate.

It is our belief that these punishments are meant to discourage bike clutter for the safety and convenience of the campus community. However, the administration of these punishments and fines has become increasingly punitive, targeting students who have found bike racks impacted and have resorted to locking to trees, railings and other alternatives due to a lack of available, legal options.

Until the university can provide sufficient bike-related infrastructure to accommodate increased admission rates, these tickets and instances of impound represent an unfair burden on student bikers.
