The purpose of this petition is to encourage the use of precise, behaviour-based language when describing condescending or dismissive communication. Terms such as “condescending explanation”, “dismissal of expertise” and “gender-based assumptions” allow us to identify the actual behaviour and recognise sexism where the evidence supports it, without automatically making a person's sex part of the accusation.
I have also been exploring whether we could introduce a gender-neutral term, such as “gendumptions” for unwarranted gender-based assumptions, or “gendumpting” for the act of making or acting on those assumptions. These are proposed terms intended to encourage discussion about how we describe such behaviour consistently across genders.
Where a gendered pattern exists, it should be acknowledged and discussed openly. However, we should also be willing to question whether a gender-specific label is always necessary when the behaviour itself can be described more accurately and consistently.
This is not about dismissing anyone's experiences of sexism. It is about encouraging fairness, precision and consistency in the language we use.
Thank you again for your support. Please share the petition and help us keep this important discussion going!
