The Issue

Being a citizen of South Africa and experiencing the harsh realities of unemployment due to age restrictions has been a life-altering ordeal. For 33 years, I have grappled with joblessness, watching opportunities slip away simply because the age bracket for most positions is limited to 18 to 35 years. This limitation not only stripped me of my self-worth but also made me feel like a burden on society.

The current employment law in South Africa  systematically sidelines valuable members of our community by enforcing an age cap on job eligibility. While it's commendable to provide opportunities for younger adults, it is equally important to harness the experience and skills residing in those beyond the age of 35. The reality is that a large segment of our population remains unemployed, contributing negatively to our nation's economy.

It is an insult for the government to award an adult with R370 for a full month and survive solely on this pathetic amount of money that only caters for a weeks bread for a family of six (6).

The same SRD must maintain a person who has bills to pay ,care for their family and still gain respect from their family. This limitation has destroyed the respect for parents in their household as the primary pride for each child is the wealth of their parents ie any one in the society is respected because of their assets and status . Poverty is vile and has succumbed communities to look down at each other.

Our economy is going down the drain because the community at large is unemployed, if you don't have a job you lose your self worth,  you accumulate chronic illnesses because of stress.

The government is purposely implementing these laws and rules for the public to become dependent on them to silence them,  purposely creating less opportunities to stay in control of public funds. We need to be cognizant of our economy and how it impacts us as citizens,  the SRD is an incumbent of destruction and it's humiliation to humanity.

Survival can't be extended to a point where you lose your self worth. Economical  dynamics are sidelined by our government when it comes to expressing the interest of its citizens. The SRDs R370 is evident that the government undermine our level of responsibility and understanding.

What kind of government adopts a program that degrades the integrity of it's citizens to a mere R370 and claim to assist them to get by?

A government with preferences to have over eight million citizens to depend upon grants from 35yrs to 60yrs,which simultaneously indicates that for 25yrs prior to the age of 60 these vulnerable citizens become the states burden,  whereas if employed they can inflate the economy by 70% in the first quarter of the fiscal year.

Private  companies have mirrored this governmental age favoritism, further limiting job opportunities for anyone outside the prescribed age range. This approach is discriminatory and borders on being unconstitutional as it privileges a select group, leaving out others who possess the capability and readiness to contribute positively to the workforce.

Changing these employment laws will not only empower individuals above the age of 35 but will also inject much-needed labor and economic upliftment to SouthAfrica. By eliminating these age barriers, companies can benefit from a diversified, experienced workforce that is eager to contribute and succeed.

A staggering 32,7% unemployed citizens in the first quarter of 2026, quarter 2 that is between April and June it increased to 33,6%. The unemployed citizens are frustrated as they are sidelined due to hypocrisy ,corruption and nepotism. Eight million (8m) eligible, healthy citizens are now prune to health conditions that resulted to chronic illnesses they acquired because of their circumstances. An editional 11% of expanded unemployed job seekers are also disadvantaged.

We urge the South African government to revise their employment policies and mandate a fair employment practice across both public and private sectors. Every competent individual deserves a chance to work, regardless of their age, as long as they have the skills and willingness. Removing age restrictions would not only provide hope for those currently sidelined but build a more inclusive and economically stable nation.
