Stop the baseless and draconian ban on video games

The Issue

"The [Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Ass'n] decision pointed to fairy tales like those of the Brothers Grimm, which are regularly given to children to read, "contain no shortage of gore" that are also present in video games." ~ Wikipedia

While I sympathise at the relatives of two teenagers who were killed over brawls ensuing at Internet shops, I have to say that the recent propositions involving a total ban on the games Defence of the Ancients (DOTA), and recently, Counter-Strike as well as similar shooters, reeks more of a reactionary media panic and a witch-hunt rather than a reasonable approach to youth delinquency.

To ban the games means to generalise and stereotype on both the media platform and the youth - not everyone who happens to play them grows up to be a hoodlum or a criminal; it all depends on how they are reared and cared for by their parents among other things. Second, with that logic in mind, shouldn't you and your council ban action movies and cartoons such as Ben 10 and the like? Or The Catcher in the Rye for being riddled with obscenities when there's actually more to it than just that? Or perhaps even fairy tales as they were originally written to be dark and grisly before Walt Disney came along and "sanitised" them? That line of thinking and reacting is no different from the moral panics of yesteryear - comics, music and even television were viewed as a negative influence, but now look at what happened.

What would be more sensible is if you issue a set of guidelines to be followed by public internet terminals such as banning gambling and other unethical practices, and restricting minors from being in the premises at school hours, rather than play whack-a-mole at the next game you come across just because you find it objectionable.
