Implementing Humane, Modern Technologies to Reduce Research Boat Traffic Part 1!

Boat traffic and associated noise is recognized as one of the three major threats to orcas. Reducing boat traffic must include Research Vessel Traffic.

Decades old research methods can be barbaric and inhumane. The old school, peer review Ivory Tower has supported lucrative career experiments that sacrifice some “subjects” all in the name of science! Sentient, endangered orca families must not continue to be treated as research tools. It has not stopped the decline of the endangered orcas and others!

a) Skin Biopsies

Extremely close research boat approaches to shoot skin biopsy darts can result in fear exhibited by quivering, evasive behaviours and infections.

Replacement methodologies could include drones with petri dishes. From a single sample of whale blow, scientists may be able to collect respiratory bacteria, lipids, proteins, DNA and hormones.

b)  Breath Sampling

Researchers make extremely close boat approaches with petri dishes attached to poles. They hold it over the whale for a breath sample. This can be stressful and cause injuries.

Drones have been used to collect breath samples. The expelled mucus contains health indicators. One is a stress hormone known as cortisol.

c) Scat Collection

Scat Collection continues with harmful close boat following that interrupts natural behaviors.

Drones with cameras to locate feces for boat collection at a safe distance from orcas should be tested.  Collecting health information from whales without hurting them includes collecting their skin (sometimes left floating in the ocean) and their feces.

We are approaching Lifeforce’s 40 years of starting one of the first “ecology” organizations. Lifeforce needs to continue our vital volunteer work! We have achieved many victories but the rights of animals continue to be violated! We have many ongoing campaigns and upcoming new ones to get legal rights for animals!
