We request that Unilever supply nut safe ‘ on the go’ ice cream again
The Issue
Dear Mr Jope
As you will be aware by now from the emails you have received from parents of children with nut allergy we are extremely upset that Unilever has changed manufacturing production by labelling many of your previously nut safe ice cream with ' may contain almond' and ‘hazelnut‘ warnings.
Due to these new warnings many thousands of UK nut allergy sufferers cannot enjoy family favourites such as Magnum, Magnum Tubs, Soleros, Boxed Feasts and single Strawberry Cornetto anymore.
What is even more unfortunate is that across the UK Unilever dominate the market for supply to ice cream vans, cafes and other venues leaving those with nut allergy no nut safe ice cream options this summer when out and about. Imagine if you were with the child that was told sorry none of your previous choices are safe anymore? sorry there's no ice cream here you can eat! sadly that's now the reality for many. With 1 in 40 living with nut allergy, plus friends and extended family, that's a lot of people your excluding.
Another important issue here is that the new warning is very small with no 'change of allergen' or 'change of ingredients' warning on the front packaging and I personally know five parents who missed the warning and have given the unsafe ice creams to their children, before noticing the small warning on the box.
Please can you consider changing the manufacturer of these items to a nut safe facility.
Unilever announced at the time of the legal merger in June that,
’ There will also be no changes to the manufacture and supply of Unilever products in The Netherlands and the United Kingdom as a result of unification. ‘
So why is this now not the case? These are your companies promises yet you must have immediately changed production of these previously nut safe products.
I run a nut allergy support forum with 9,000 members across social media platforms and please be assured there are many families devastated by your decision. I am sure in time you will see this too by the volume of signatures to this petition.
Our children are excluded from so much food and 'choice' its upsetting to hear how sad they are now over your labelling changes. This applies to adults too living with allergy, many whom have known the likes of Magnum & Solero to be nut safe for many years. A Mini Milk or Twister is not desirable for many.
