Dear esteemed advocate,
Thank you for signing our petition against the predatory practices of online loan sharks in Nigeria. Your support is a powerful testament to our collective concern for the vulnerable in our society, and it strengthens our resolve to fight for justice and digital rights.
As you know, the digital landscape, while offering immense opportunities, has also become a hunting ground for unscrupulous online loan companies. These entities, often operating with impunity, exploit the dire financial circumstances of weak Nigerians, ensnaring them in a vicious cycle of exorbitant interest rates, hidden charges, and relentless harassment.
The stories we've gathered are heartbreaking. Individuals, desperate for a lifeline, sign up for small loans only to find themselves hounded by aggressive recovery agents who resort to public shaming, defamation, and illegal access to personal data. Their digital rights are violated with alarming regularity: private information shared without consent, contacts bombarded with shaming messages, and reputations systematically destroyed. This isn't just about debt; it's about the fundamental right to privacy, dignity, and security in the digital age.
These online loan sharks operate in a regulatory grey area, exploiting the gaps in our current legal framework. This allows them to trample on the rights of citizens, leaving a trail of financial ruin and emotional distress. We cannot stand by while our fellow Nigerians are subjected to such exploitation and digital rights abuses.
This is why we are not only advocating for a complete overhaul of the regulatory landscape but also actively working to provide support and education to those affected. We are campaigning for stiffer regulations that will:
Cap interest rates: To prevent exploitative charges that trap borrowers in endless debt.
Mandate transparency: To ensure all fees and terms are clearly disclosed upfront.
Enforce data privacy: To protect citizens' personal information from unauthorized access and dissemination.
Strengthen enforcement mechanisms: To ensure swift and decisive action against perpetrators.
Provide avenues for redress: For victims of harassment and digital rights violations.
To achieve this, we need your continued support. The Centre for Youth and People's Livelihood Protection (CYPLP), through its digital rights initiative, is at the forefront of this fight. We are providing legal aid to victims, conducting public awareness campaigns, engaging with policymakers, and building a network of support for those targeted by these online predators.
Your donation, no matter the size, will directly contribute to:
Legal representation: Helping victims pursue justice against these companies.
Digital literacy programs: Educating vulnerable Nigerians on their rights and how to protect themselves online.
Advocacy efforts: Lobbying for robust legislation and stricter enforcement.
Research and documentation: Gathering evidence to expose the scale of the problem and inform policy.
We urge you to translate your signature on our petition into tangible support. Please consider making a donation today at www.cyplp.net.ng/donate/
Together, we can turn the tide against these online sharks. Together, we can ensure that every Nigerian's digital rights are protected, and that our digital space becomes one of opportunity and safety, not fear and exploitation.
Thank you for standing with us in this crucial fight for justice and dignity.
Sincerely,
Dennis Ekwere
