CBS 46: Put Ben Swann's "Reality Check" Back On The Air! #FreeBenSwann
The Issue
Dear CBS 46,
With American trust in the media at record lows (http://www.gallup.com/poll/195542/americans-trust-mass-media-sinks-new-low.aspx and an online space dominated by "clickbait" and "fake news", many have discovered and come to appreciate the honest work put forth by Mr. Ben Swann in his "Reality Check" segments aired on your network.
It was incredibly disheartening, therefore, to see this series pulled from Youtube and your station. Seemingly, this was a reaction over the last segment that was aired, concerning a particularly controversial topic I won't name here. Whether we believe that this topic is "fake news" or not, we do not feel it is in the best interests of your viewing audience, nor of your revenue to remove "Reality Check" from air over the work of a single segment: one whose intention was merely to investigate and understand the other side of a highly controversial subject.
Ben Swann has gained, over the years, a wide-ranging audience across the United States for his work, and with it an online following. His investigative work has been respected by many on both sides of the political aisle, and still is. He promotes factual, honest reporting, while still willing to ask tough, at times controversial questions. Most importantly, he still has our trust.
While I understand you are a local affiliate and have limited interests in the national issues Ben often addresses in "Reality Check", these segments serve to encourage more to tune-in locally, and draw more users online to your site. This translates to increased ad revenue. With this segment gone, those numbers may decrease.
We therefore ask that you immediately return Ben Swann's "Reality Check" to air and online. In a time of limited media trust, Mr. Swann is a beacon of integrity who, without reservation, will tell Atlanta and the US "what you need to know".
Thank you,
The Undersigned
